We are working with the international community to support the Afghan people.

The British Embassy in Kabul suspended in-country operations in August 2021. All UK diplomatic and consular staff were withdrawn from Afghanistan.

Urgent assistance

Getting help

If you cannot get the support you need from local services, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) can help British people abroad.

We have suspended all operations at the British Embassy in Kabul. Our consular assistance can only be provided remotely and is extremely limited.

We prioritise emergencies and people who are vulnerable, for example, if someone’s:

  • ill, injured, or involved in a crime

  • with a British person who’s died

You should also read travel advice for Afghanistan, and register for email alerts to receive the latest updates.

You can access full consular services at our embassies and consulates in neighbouring countries. However, all travel throughout Afghanistan is extremely dangerous, and border crossings may not be open.

British passports

If you are in Afghanistan and you would like information about applying for a British passport, or would like to check on your passport application, visit www.gov.uk/hmpo or call the passport advice line on +44 (0) 300 222 0000.

UK visas

If you would like information about applying for UK visas for yourself or your relatives, visit www.gov.uk/ukvi or call UK Visas and Immigration on +44 (0) 300 790 6268.

The FCDO cannot influence or support passport or visa applications.

Development work with Afghanistan

Afghanistan is facing a serious humanitarian crisis. According to the United Nations, over 18 million Afghans, almost half of the population, are at ‘crisis’ or ‘emergency’ levels of severe acute malnutrition.

The UK is working to provide Afghans with life-saving aid, and we remain fully committed to supporting Afghanistan and its people.

Our funding is primarily channelled through international organisations, and no funding will go directly to the Taliban.
